Naming policy for city property
The council explored whether the policy for naming city facilities should allow honoring a deceased person and their surviving spouse — prompted by interest in renaming the pickleball courts. The current rule requires the honoree to be deceased at least a year.
Cotton Park parking lot reconstruction
The flood-wrecked Cotton Park lot would be rebuilt in concrete with 63 spaces and a wider entrance, with a USDA grant possibly covering half the $450,000 cost. Construction could begin in 2027.
July 4 fireworks display and Carr Street closure
The annual Chamber-sponsored fireworks show is set for 10 p.m. July 4 at the south Polaris parking lot, with rain dates July 5 and 11. Carr Street closes 8-11 p.m. that night for spectator safety.
Downtown Street Dance Closures
Dakota Days got approval to close West Main and part of Market Street on October 1 from 1 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. — two hours longer than last year for vendor setup — plus the noise permit for the dance.
Library annual report and non-resident card policy
The library is thriving — visits up 5%, programs up 28%, 98% satisfaction. Council also raised whether a handful of out-of-county families with kids in Vermillion schools could get free library cards; that call belongs to the library board.
